The Benefits of Free Transit

Besides being free, what does a free transit system get us?

Safer Subways

When the subways are free, everyone will ride them—they will become the default mode of getting around, whether you need to go from Marine Park to Inwood or just a few blocks in Manhattan. More people on the subway means more eyes on the subway; people watch out for one another, and crime is less likely to occur.

Meanwhile, the police won’t have to watch for turnstile-jumpers. Instead, they can patrol the platforms and bring an even greater sense of security.

Less Traffic

Public transit is already a great alternative to private cars and taxis. Free public transit is the unbeatable alternative. Why Uber or struggle with parking when there’s a reliable, zero-cost way to get around? And as we’ve learned from congestion pricing, less traffic is also better for those who do drive as well.

Better Air

Less automobile traffic means less pollution—better air quality for the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers who don’t drive.

More Freedom

Imagine having the freedom to go anywhere in the city, anytime, for nothing. You can live anywhere, work anywhere, and no longer worry about the cost—financial and psychological—of the schlep. We believe firmly that free public transit will open up new vistas for development in New York City and bring a new level of happiness to our citizens.
