What Is the Free Transit Party?
The Free Transit Party is a movement dedicated to making the buses and subways of New York City entirely free for everyone.
Why?
Because getting around the city is essential—for students, for workers, for job seekers, for retirees, for everyone. Unfortunately, the cost of riding the subway and buses keeps rising and rising, draining the funds not just of the lowest-paid New Yorkers but of anyone who needs to take more than a ride or two a day. As I write this, the fare is $2.90, with a 4% hike to $3 expected in August 2025.
That is too expensive!
The measures the city has taken to mitigate the cost of transit are laudable, but they are not enough. New York needs a new goal: bringing the cost of subway and bus ridership down to zero.
This is the Free Transit Party’s goal, and we hope to accomplish it by:
Raising awareness among the public that free transit is achievable
Sharing news stories from reputable sources covering NYC transit (and beyond)
Building a community of people who care about the cost of transit—and can do something to bring it down
Educating and endorsing political candidates who share our goal
Having a damn good time while doing this!
It’s important to note that the Free Transit Party is not actually a political party (yet). Instead, it’s a movement by and for people who love subways and buses, who understand their important to the smooth and happy functioning of the city, and who want to express and share their love with everyone. We may not be a party in the traditional sense, but we party. Join us!
